rapid masking of bluescreen background
« on: March 08, 2013, 05:38:59 PM »
I am at the moment experimenting with using the bluescreen technique to facilitate masking when photographing small objects: I have a background which is blue (actually a fullscreen blue image displayed on a computer monitor to ensure even colour and brightness and to avoid any shadowing on the background), and my objects don't contain blue colours. This makes masking with the magic wand quite easy.

For large numbers of photographs (in my case, 100-150 per object), there is still a lot of manual work involved in masking the blue background in all photographs. I think it would be great if there was a button to "mask blue in all images", again with a tolerance slider as in the magic wand tool.

Hello RalfH,

You can use Mask-from-background applied to the blue image of the same size, or use a Python command.

Hello Alexey,

thank you for the tip; I will try it that way. It's great that PhotoScan has so much more functionality than one would think when seeing this really easy-to-use software!

Hello Alexey,

I have tried this feature, and it is nice for a few images or when the background changes from image to image. For the bluescreen technique, it doesn't help to make things much easier or faster, because it requires a separate background image file for each photograph. To use this feature, I would have to create hundreds of background files (even if the background stays the same for all photographs in a project).

Therefore, I want to reiterate my suggestion to add a "mask all images by colour" feature, or at least to add a background masking feature that allows to use the same background file for all images in a project or chunk.

Hello RalfH,

Then do you mean to specify exactly the same color or different for every image?

If first than you can create a single image and enter its name into the corresponding "backgound" filename field. You can input static filename without using template masks.
