Filling in the holes
« on: May 19, 2010, 09:48:08 PM »
What software do you recommend for filling the "holes" in the model  due to missing views? I know you can export the model into a number of formats. I'm just looking for a suggestion for a fast way to paint or clone in 3D to add to or repair the model.

Take a look at the MeshLab project. It is free and provides many advanced algorithms for mesh processing. There is a hole filling filter under "Filters->Remeshing, simplification and reconstruction->Close Holes" menu item.

Hello, Harvey,

Starting from version 0.7.0 hole filling option is included in PhotoScan.

I have only tried the trial version, but the hole filler in your software seems to be causing problems when building the atlas. Is this something you have experienced? Is there a fix in the making?

We have no information about this problem. Are you getting any errors during texturing, or are there any problems with the generated atlas?

Can you please send the screenshot to support@agisoft.ru?

Did another test and the same thing happens. There are no errors during any step of the process. It seems like it is filling the holes randomly. I don't know if I am missing anything, but the result is very strange.

Hello, Kjellis85,

Looks like you are not setting the "Size threshold" parameter in the "Close Holes" dialog.

The default value of 0 means that PhotoScan will try to close all holes, regardless of their sizes. That also includes the outer boundary of the surface region, so the duplicate surface is created. This results in unpleasing effect and is obviously not desired in your case.

Please try to specify a non-zero value for the "Size threshold" parameter to limit the size of holes to be filled. It is measured in a number of edges that form a hole boundary. Try some value around 100, increasing it further if required.
