Ring Flash
« on: March 26, 2013, 07:10:47 PM »
I'm curious if anyone has had any success (or failures) using a ring flash for illumination.

I'm looking at a potential project where I'm not sure static off-camera lights are practical and it seems like a ring flash might be an option for surfaces without to much depth variation.

Im using a turntable setup with a ringflash and 2 softboxes for lighting and it works like a charm. The ringflash is mostly used to slightly lighten up the areas that the softboxes doesnt reach.

The lights are also polarized to remove the specular highlights which helps both the mesh and texture quality.
I have not however tried ringlfash on larger static environments, but I think it would work just fine.

Thanks, this would be a static environment. I've never really used a ring flash for anything and I guess my main concern is with the halo you get when there is significant foreground-background separation. I guess that could be managed with some clever masking though.

BTW, nice mesh. I'm getting a bit of a S.T.A.L.K.E.R vibe.

Best,
