BUILDING A WORKSTATION PC - gtx super 2080 or TWO gtx 1070ti
« on: September 12, 2019, 12:19:12 PM »
I'm building a new workstation and was wondering what would work better a gtx super 2080 or two gtx 1070ti
I'm not decided on the CPU but was going for a Threadripper 2990wx ( the 32 core one) and 128gb RAM
an average project has 8000-1500 photos. And Building the dense cloud is always the longest step so I was thinking the more cores the better.
I'd appreciated and advice.

Not the best time to get that 2990wx cpu, you're couple months away from Zen2 threadripper availability (considerably faster processors).

I'm also not sure if 32 cores will help DC building, you probably want more per-thread performance than thread count.

Look up benchmarks on pudget systems website for more info.

If I'm not mistaken for dense cloud the benchmark showed higher that the CPUs with more cores preformed better with the i9-7980XE (18 cores) and threadripper doing the best. But I didn't know that new threadripper cpus werw around the corner though.

Hi DCSK,

I suggest to get an Intel i9 9900K (supports up to 128GB RAM) and a dual Nvidia RTX 2070 setup, unless $$ doesn't play a major role, then go for the Core i9 9940X with (dual) RTX 2080, RTX 2080 Ti or Titan RTX.

Have a look at this website for further details:
https://www.pugetsystems.com/recommended/Recommended-Systems-for-Agisoft-Metashape-145/Hardware-Recommendations

Note: I suggest to stick to CPUs from Intel because even with less cores they seem to outperform AMD's threadrippers. 16 core TRX 2950X is considerably slower (and more expensive) than an 8 core i9 9900K. It's not just about the number of cores.

All the best.

Best regards,
