Augmented Reality Applications
« on: May 11, 2013, 06:38:04 PM »
My 3D r&d is currently at a standstill [for the next couple of months at least].

As well as 3d [human] printing I had started to look at this subject but nothing much to share yet.

Might anyone post their learning and experience of using photoscan data within Augmented Reality Applications [commercial / otherwise] ?

I'm particulary interested in the ipad/android tablet type environment [not oculus-rift type stuff yet] whereby a 3d "still" [of a person] is reviewed / navigated around [e.g  a "marker" in the home enviromment].

Recommendations / costs / semi-DIY / DIY solutions - anything appreciated.

I have been testing converting real live objects to augmented 3D models with the use of "junaio" and "metaio creator"
Junaio is an augmented reality viewer for ipad, iphone and android devices.
Meatio creator is a "simple" authoring tool for creating augmented material.
Meataio also has AREL ( Augmented Reality Experience Language ) for scripting a more sofisticated augmented experience.
You can use metaio creator demo version for free to create augmented content of an 3d model.
It's 3d model import is not cutting edge , u can use the obj format. I can give u som headache getting the texture mapping working. Poly count must be low like in 2000-4000 poly's, texture map can not be to big also ....
This technoligy is still in it's beginning stage (i think so) but it is getting there .... I have seen some stunning results....
For instance, no dynamic specular effects or shadows.
U can use bender or max to bake the ambient occulsion to the model and the connecting  surface of the the augmented target into the texture map.
Just one map in junaio no multi maps....

Are u still folloing me? =)

I think augmented reality rocks, thing what will happen if the google glasses get  pimped to better quality picture and bett camera.

Anyhow, photoscan and augmented reality ceeps me awake at night...

Greets , rob

Thanks for this b2unit - i'll look into it more as soon as I can.

The amount Google knows about us is scarey even before glasses gets going !

I played with this a little while back (Photoscan and Shimmer AR) :

Shared it with several people but few grasped what it meant...  They will.
