Importing Metashape texture into meshlab
« on: October 26, 2020, 12:08:26 AM »
This is a newbie question and I would appreciate your help.

I've made a nice textured model in Metashape (using the default Build Texture parameters) and Exported it resulting in .ply and .jpg files.   The .ply files loads into meshlab without incident but I have been unsuccessful in importing the texture ,jpg file. In meshlab the path I've been using(among many others) is Filters/Texture/Transfer: Vertex Colors to Texture. The message I get back is Failure loading textures: /XXX.jpg. I've changed the Texture width and height in the meshlab dropdown window to 4096 each but no success. In fact I've tried many other paths but cannot find happiness.

What is the proper sequence of steps to import a Metashape texture file into meshlab?

Again, I apologize for such as basic question but several hours online has not brought me the answer.

Hello swhite,

I can suggest to try using short name for the textured mesh export (less than 8 symbols), without "spaces" and non-ASCII symbols, as it could be a reason of the texture import failure in MeshLab.

Alas, the name of the file is "Stest".

Hello swhite,

Can you please then send the PLY file with the corresponding texture file to support@agisoft.com, so that we could try to see what's wrong with the import to MeshLab?

Have you also checked if other applications are loading the texture properly?

I just discovered the answer to my question. In addition to short names without spaces the key seems to be exporting the textures as a png file, not a jpg file. When I made this adjustment all went well.

Final follow up: everything is working as it should. The problems were caused by my inexperience and there are no problems with Metashape or Meshlab along these lines.
