Use stiched 360 picture or individual pictures from station ?
« on: December 01, 2020, 06:51:21 PM »
Hi,

i'm starting a photogrammetry project. I'm taking many 360 pictures sets ( more than 20 sets) in the Sainte Chapelle in Paris (one exemple: https://kuula.co/post/7CKPMs).

This is my first try with photogrammetry using 360 pictures sets.

I was wondering if i should stich each set in a 360 equirectangular picture first or import all photos in metashape and use the set as station feature for each group ?

Each group is made of a little more than 300 60MP pics (from 7r4 with a 70mm lens).

What is the max picture size to import into metashape ? each stiched 360 picture is between 8 and 9 gigapixels.

Thanks

Hello cyrilp,

I would rather try using Camera Station concept, providing that properly calibrated nodal head (or similar equipment) is used for each camera location.

Extremely large images should be subdivided internally during the main processing stages, so it should be possible to process accurately stitched panoramas. However, I can't remember if I previously heard of such experiments with 8 gigapixel images processing in Metashape. At least it is not something regular.

thanks for you, quick reply.

do you know what is the max picture size to add ?

if i add individual pictures, i guess i should align pictures in metashape one set a a time ?

Hello cyrilp,

If you are following camera station approach, you should add all the images to the same chunk and group cameras to camera stations, then run Align Photos operation.

The coordinate information can be loaded using Import CSV command. I think that XYZ coordinates for one camera per camera station will be sufficient for the further model referencing and scaling.
