Positioning of fiducial marks (historical aerial images)
« on: March 23, 2021, 10:48:04 PM »
I am currently working with historical aerial images.

For camera calibration, I have the focal length (original) and fiducial coordinates from a calibration certificate of a similar lens, but I am experincing troubles at placing the fiducial marks.
Regarding fiducials, the user manual  considers the origin of the coordinate system at the photo center, X axis to the right and Y axis downwards. My calibration certificate coincides with that. However, after placing the first two fiducial marks, the third and fourth fiducials appear automatically at the wrong place.
See attachements for reference. Note: the attached certificate is just for reference, I simplified the fiducial coordinates to a singl evalue for rapid tests.
Can anyone help me and tell me what is wrong?

thanks,

 Daniel

Hello Daniel,

Thank you for reporting the problem.

In the next version update the behavior will be similar to described in the Manual.

Meanwhile you may need to adjust the input according to Y up, X right orientation of the image axis for fiducials.

Many thanks Alexey,

I think I got it right now. The coordinate origin lies in the top left corner of my photos and, as you pointed out, Y is positive upwards.
That said, I don't understand why I get worst results using fiducials compared to the resuts without using fiducials!

I'll keep working on it.

Hello Daniel,

Have you grouped all the images to the single calibration group with "scanned images" mark enabled?

Sorry for th late reply Alexey. No, I have not grouped the images in a single group because I have cropped them and have different dimensions. On the other hand, I have some georeferencing problems in some part of my mountain areas, and although I place many GCPs on those areas, the dense cloud does not improve, or the georeferencing becomes worse...

Hello Daniel,

If you enable "scanned camera with fiducial marks" option for all the calibration groups, you can then merge them, providing all of them have been captured with the same camera. It doesn't matter, if they have different dimensions in pixels, as fiducial marks are used to align them and scale to the same dimensions.

Hello again Alexey,

I have tried grouping my four photos in a single group and marked the fiducials, but I cannot get any alignment. I reach 74% of the alignment done and then it does not process further after more tha 1,5 hours...
