Error message "Incompatible keypoints"
« on: April 12, 2021, 06:53:44 PM »
Hi,
I have been working on a rather large model of some underwater topography.  One of the steps of the process I am following involves adding cameras from a dive to a previous model (which is made up of all previous dives), and to then use a camera based alignment of the previous (accumulated) model to the new model (of the last dive) for the production of a rough model to help me to understand which areas are covered and which need further dives.
When attempting this with my last data set I get an error "Incompatible keypoints".  The process I am following has worked fine for the first 7 dives so I cannot quite understand why I am encountering this problem now.  Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks and regards
John

Hello John,

"incompatible keypoints" message appears, when you are trying to use incremental alignment in the version 1.7.x for the project pre-calculated in 1.6 or older version. Key points from 1.6 and older versions are not compatible with 1.7 version.

Thanks Alexey.  That could be it, I have had to do a full windows reinstall of my machine recently and although I am very certain that I was previously running 1.7, I could be mistaken.  Is there any way to check the version that the models were previously built on?

Is there a way to "upgrade" the models to the new version or is the only option to remain on 1.6 for this model?

Thanks

John

Hello John,

In chunk info dialog accessible from the Workspace pane context menu you can access the information in which version the asset has been generated.

If you need to re-align some photos to the existing solution without processing everything from scratch, you can do that in 1.6 version and then continue further processing operations in 1.7 version.

Hi Alexey,

Out of 5 previous alignments for 4 of them I was on 1.7, specifically 1.7.0.11736 and 1.7.1.11797.  I  was on 1.6.5.11249 only for the very first model.  I had no such errors aligning chunks using the same approach up until my current version which is 1.7.2.12070.  So could it be the case that the incompatibility was introduced in 1.7.2?

In that case is it possible to either:
(a) download 1.7.1.11797 and continue working with this version?
(b) rebuild the alignment for just the first 1.6.5 chunk using 1.7.2 and move on from there?

I prefer option (b) of course

Thanks and regards

John

Hello John,

Can you describe your typical workflow for these projects?

Do you use only camera based chunk alignment (not using incremental alignment within the same chunk) and if you are then merging the chunks, then whether "merge tie points" option is enabled? Additionally please specify, if there are keypoints present in every chunk that you are merging.

I had the same problem with my underwater wreck model. I combined chunks, and then was unable to align new cameras to the resulting chunk. I had been using v1.7.1. I updated that to v1.7.3, but with no help.

Then I tried to rebuild the point cloud with Tools --> Tie Points --> Build Point Cloud, and that solved the problem. I have no idea, why, but maybe it will reset something...

I just tried adding new photos to an existing project for the first time and I followed the instructions in the manual, doing Align Photos. I kept getting this error. Then I tried selecting the Cameras, right click, and Align Selected. That worked

Edit: I spoke to soon. The new photos aren't aligned. They show up as "filename, NA"  under the Chunk tree

Hello DayGeckoArt,

Which version of Metashape you are using now and in which version the existing project has been created?

All the same version, the trial of Metashape Pro 1.8.2

Hello DayGeckoArt,

How big is this project? Can you send the project saved after the alignment stage to support@agisoft.com, so that we could check it on our side? If possible please also send any image from the second sub-set that you are trying to re-align using incremental alignment feature. In case you have the processing log related to the failed alignment operation, please also send it to us.

I do have a copy saved before I added the new photos. I saved to a new file before doing "Reset Alignment". But it's 20GB! I do have everything logged

BTW it doesn't do any processing, it doesn't appear to look for keypoints on the new photos. It just instantly says "Incompatible keypoints"

Hello DayGeckoArt,

Please then send to us just processing log, PDF report exported from the project and example of the image that you are trying to add to the existing alignment.

Hello DayGeckoArt,

Thank you for sharing additional information related to the project. I would say that the problem could be related to the chunk merging operation - can you please confirm, if it has been performed for this project?

If chunk merging has been applied, please specify the processing parameters (of Align Photos stage) used for each chunk, and also specify, if Merge Tie Points option has been used for the chunk merging procedure.
