HEIC image format
« on: May 20, 2021, 02:34:31 PM »
I really, really, really wish Metashape would support the HEIC image format.  We are making 3D scans from photos that customers submit to us, and many of them are using newer iPhones and sending us HEIC files.  It's a pain to have to convert them every time.  It would be great if Metashape could read them, even if only on the Mac since it's just 1 line of code to do it.

I agree on HEIC, maybe you can use the installed system codec that iphone users usually have on their pc

Hello,

Seems that HEIC container is a subject of patent, therefore you shouldn't expect HEIC support in Metashape in the near future.

Hi all,

attached is metadata extracted with ExifTool from a 24 Mpix iPhone 16 Pro Max back triple camera 6.765mm f/1.78 HEIC image.

It seems to have depth data so Metashape support of such format could be very useful  for model construction..

Hi, Paul!

Apple devices can embed depth data using jpeg format as well. You just need to switch Camera Format setting to Most Compatible in iOS settings (attached picture).

We have support for it.
https://agisoft.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/31000162212-smart-cameras-with-depth-sensor-data-processing

Using depth is somewhat inconvenient though because only selfie camera stores depthmaps suitable for reconstruction (that's why it is TrueDepth). Rear camera stores uncalibrated and scaled disparity which is hard to use (it is marked as Accuracy : relative in metadata that you are attached).

And because of specifics of dot-projector used for depth estimation, capture range is limited to 2-3 meters and depth map doesn't catch fine details.

You can download sample capture here https://download.agisoft.com/datasets/depth_images.zip
