Dark patches in hillshade
« on: June 29, 2021, 11:28:47 AM »
I'm trying to create a DEM from a point cloud dataset made from a UAV survey. I've created a hillshade from the dense point cloud by using the blast2dem function of LAStools.

I observed some weird dark patches in the hillshade once I opened it in Google Earth. What could be the possible reasons behind this?

Hello debc,

it looks like there were alignment problems in the project, as if the alignment has been split into several poorly connected components, which leads to the noise in the overlapping area of those components.

Hello Alexey! Thanks for the response. An absolute beginner here.

I loaded the images into Metashape and ran the initial alignment. All the cameras (6630 cameras) were aligned after the initial alignment process. However, there are white gaps/holes in the "Tie Points". The locations of these gaps/holes somewhat correspond to the dark patches in the hillshade.

Could you please suggest a workflow that would help me identify and re-align the (probably) incorrectly aligned images?
