How to remove distorted portions of DEM?
« on: November 30, 2022, 07:21:30 PM »
Hello, everyone,

We recently flew a drone mapping mission over an eroding river channel with a steep, near-vertical cliff face.

Most of the photos were taken vertically for mapping purposes, but we also took several photos at an oblique angle to capture the details of the vertical face. When we process the images, it adds an artificial, featureless sheet extending beyond the mapped area - presumably the result of details in the oblique photos' backgrounds. I've masked the backgrounds in all of the oblique photos in an effort to remove the problem areas. Masking seems to help with the stitched orthophoto, but the DEM still shows the artificial horizontal sheets.

Is there a way that I'm unaware of to remove areas in a DEM?

I've attached a screen cap where I've highlighted the area I'm talking about.

Thank you all very much in advance.

Hello archeomason,

You can draw the polygonal shape in the Ortho view, set the Boundary type to it as Outer Boundary, then duplicate the DEM via Workspace pane having "clip to boundary shapes" option enabled and then remove the original DEM.
