Import Point - Issue with import Dense Cloud
« on: December 21, 2022, 06:37:43 PM »
Hi all,

this is my first post Yeah!

I'm trying to mesh a fairly large project about the Rocca Sforzesca in Imola (interior and exterior). After a few months of field surveys (700 scans in hr laser scanner and photogrammetry of the roofs with a drone) I obtained the decimated and clean dense point cloud (about 500 million points). and here we come to the subject of the post, when I try to import the point cloud (exported from the Leica Cyclone 3DR software) on Metashape some areas are formed in which the cloud is not imported correctly, it almost seems that the outside and the inside of the dots in some areas is reversed. I tried to change the format of the cloud in import (.e57, .las, .laz) as well as the parameters from the command import point of Metashape (Direction and Local surface neighbors) without getting improvements. I have also tried shrinking the cloud in specific portions and in some areas the problem still occurs. Attached are some screenshots of the problem which then directly affect the creation of the Mesh.

Any advice on what I can do to get to a solution?

Update:

I tried to import the same Dense Cloud on CloudCompare, and the cloud is seen correctly without holes or blackened parts. I then tried to export and re-import it on metashape, but getting the same problems mentioned above, I attach more photos. In my opinion there are problems with metashape's import point function.

In the first photo the cloud loaded and seen on Cloud Compare, in the second photo the same cloud imported on Metashape where you can see problems on the bridge area

Dear Daniele,

You may try to import raw undecimated point cloud with normals pointing towards origin and decimate it within Metashape. If you save the project before starting the import, Metashape should be able to fit into the memory limit. Starting from Metashape 2.0, each scan of a e57 file is imported into separate point cloud and you can preview first few scans if you cancel the import process after a couple of minutes, when you see "processing 7720596 points (part 2/84)..." in the log.
