Append intended for part of a chunk
« on: June 21, 2023, 12:09:23 PM »
Is anybody know the possibility to append only part of the chunks? It means we can append “tiled model” or “dense cloud” or other items only, instead of appending the entire chunks, in order to complete our backup file.

I have 2 files that are located in two different drives. One is in the computer for the working process, and another is in an external drive for backup. Every time the process is finished it will be copied (append) to the external drive as backup. For example, if the “build dense” cloud process has been finished, the entire chunk will be saved or copied in the external. The process continues with “build mesh” and “tiled model” by using the file in the computer. When finished, the entire chunks (photo alignment, dense clouds, mesh, and tiled model) the whole chunk will be saved again in the external drive as a new folder. This step requires a longer time and occupies more space in the external.

When I will execute append, I saw an option to choose to append “tiled model” and the other items as well.

Can we utilize this option for completing our backup in external drive? Or is this option intended for another purpose? If it is not possible, is there an alternative way or step to do it? So, we should not copy or append the entire chunks?

Thank you for reading this query and for the enlightenment given.

Hello AdSuwo,

Currently there's no such instrument, that would allow to save the chunk as a separate project with only certain assets. Neither there's an option to append assets to the existing chunks in the external projects.

I can only suggest the following workaround, but it should be followed carefully in order to avoid corruption of the backup copy:
if you have already save the project copy after alignment (for example) and would like to update it with the depth maps and further processing products you can open source and target project folders in the file manager window: source.files and target.files, Copy project.zip, chunk.zip and frame.zip archives from source project folder to the backup project folder. Then you need to copy the new folders from the bottom level of the project.files directory from source to the target location, like "depth_maps", "dense_cloud" and etc.
In case any other files from the previously generated assets have been changed (for example, tie points have been edited), you should also update the corresponding folder contents in the backup project folder.

But as mentioned, this should be treated carefully. I recommend to do such backup copy update, when the source project is closed.

Hi Alexey,

for the same question, is it possible with the so-called "import" process?

Thank you.

Hello AdSuwo,

Import options are not sufficient, as you may want to transfer the current alignment with the properly linked images (for this purpose serves copying chunk.zip and frame.zip - to keep EO/IO parameters for the cameras and auxiliary information related to the chunk).
Using export/import operations for other assets like mesh models, point clouds and etc. Doesn't seem to be a fast option, as both import and export would be limited to the disk access.
