Build model produces mangled mesh
« on: February 15, 2024, 10:21:54 PM »
New to metashape, but have been getting some great results thus far.
Using latest version 2.1.0.17532

I'm confused about a model of a rock I successfully built by scanning the top and bottom, building masks, aligning the chunks and building a great clean model for export.

I took another set of pics of the rock with a different cam at higher resolution, went through the same process, but cannot align the chunks. I keep getting an error "point resolution expected to be positive, got -0.008383). I searched an it looks like this may be a bug that will get fixed in the next version of metashape? Not sure.

So, I went back to the original set of pics that did work and tried building the rock again.
However, now I get a seriously mangled mesh and I have no idea why.

First image is what the rock looked like in the original successful build of the model with aligned top and bottom chunks.

Second image is the point cloud data I get with the cam alignment, which looks clean to me.

Third is the build model results I get now.

Hello MLehto,

To fix "point resolution expected to be positive" error, please check 2.1.1 version pre-release:

Professional edition:
https://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/download.agisoft.com/metashape-pro_2_1_1_x64.msi
https://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/download.agisoft.com/metashape-pro_2_1_1.dmg
https://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/download.agisoft.com/metashape-pro_2_1_1_amd64.tar.gz

Standard edition:
https://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/download.agisoft.com/metashape_2_1_1_x64.msi
https://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/download.agisoft.com/metashape_2_1_1.dmg
https://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/download.agisoft.com/metashape_2_1_1_amd64.tar.gz

But if you are generating the masks for the images in both chunks already, then I would suggest to merge chunks and then re-align all the images in the single chunk with the option Apply Masks -> To Keypoints.

I'm still getting corrupt meshes when building models even with version 2.1.1.
It appears to be memory related since I can sometimes fix it by restarting my PC, then opening a metashape project fresh and building a model.

System specs:
13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-13900K   3.00 GHz
64.0 GB Ram
Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080
Win 11 Pro

Hello MLehto,

If you are observing this problem frequently on different datasets, please share any of those projects to support@agisoft.com: source images + project that contains camera alignment, depth maps and model reconstruction results.
If the problem can be reproduced on a smaller dataset, it would be sufficient for us to get such sample dataset instead of entire project data.

With a very limited data set of images, I can repro this issue and compare between Metashape and Substance Sampler to see how each handle the content.
I tried restarting my machine several times and got similar results.
I have a sample project with images that's paired down to about 411MB. I can upload that to a google drive folder for you if you'd like.

Hi Alexey, I shared a folder with you with 2 projects for which I'm having issues.
In each case, I built a model with Metashape, with errors, then build a model in Substance Sampler to compare.
I wonder if I need to reset Metashape, since I can't build anything now. It seems to be failing at image alignment.
