3D printing - Mcor
« on: October 08, 2013, 08:31:04 PM »
Hi all, as have mentioned earlier, i have been today on exhibition with all the 3D printing devices available commercially.
Have seen the Mcor - http://www.mcortechnologies.com/3d-printers/iris/ But the drawback is the speed as mentioned earlier. There was a head printed out ( no color texture ) approx 25-30cm and it took approx 60 !! hours to finish it, if there was color, it would take approx 70-75 hours to finish. The other drawback is the quality. there a re steps from the cutting of the paper... If everythng go nice will have sample prints of figures next week, approx 20 cm in size... then will post it here......  Similar sized print on Zcorp would take just say 8-10 hours.....

It's a pity Wishgranter.

Mcor is just down the road from me a 'wee' bit - i'll try and remember to phone Conor or Fintan soon and make them hurry along.

I hope they gave you bed & breakfast during the 60 hour wait  :o :)

Looking forward to seeing the prints...

no problem, have not waited, they have shown it there in exhibit was not mine. im preparing right now few models to print out it, and wait for it to next week :-D

lets see what times we get on our own data..... but as have seen it in action ( just the building up of papers - not printing ) its very sloooooow.....

hey ... 8)

yes I recall you said it was slow... but 60 hours...? for a white model..? ermm..

I will be curious to see the model you're printing.. I see you mentioned the small steps.. some models I saw here and there all had that stepping.. not too great.. I guess if you sand it, you'd loose the color..

I recently got my Form1 printer from FormLabs and printed one of my scans.
Unfortunately I was in too much hurry that I did not set my printer settings toits highest resolution so the print turned out pretty low res.

Check out the attached image!

There's a couple of speed benchmarks in this review:

http://techcrunch.com/2013/06/17/living-in-the-future-with-the-form-labs-form-1/

"Print times are slow for high-resolution prints. The two-inch-high rook — shown below — took about six hours to complete, and less complex prints like an Indian sculpture of Aspara clocked in at 4 hours and 20 minutes. Luckily the printer is nearly silent. Its only sound is a regular, slow clicking as the laser hits the resin, the tank tilts to peel off a layer, and the platform moves up infinitesimally. It is a slow, soothing trance track when compared to Makerbot’s jagged industrial backbeat. When printing at “lower” resolution the print times can fall drastically."

There's another review here:

http://www.wired.com/reviews/2013/09/formlabs-form-1/

There is some comment chatter about a lawsuit against them, but I haven't probed further into it. It's possible that it could affect their long term prospects.

and following another link in the techcrunch comments, this guy seemed to create the ultimate test object and reviewed the printer based on how it handled the various issues the object was designed to evaluate:

9 hours for his 2x2x2 inch test object, btw

Yeah, I wish that guy would evaluate all of the printers out there...what a clever evaluation object. He seemed to indicate that he will eventually release an STL of it, which could be very handy for some semi-standardized testing.

However, it also looks like he has run into some trouble with the printer, but seems to be getting some tech support:
