I have a few suggestions for editing terrestrial laser scans in Metashape :

1) When aligning scans it should be possible to set one as a reference so that newly aligned scans can be appended to a referenced scan.

2) When importing grayscale scans, the intensity value should be automatically transferred to the RGB value so that an exported point cloud also becomes a grayscale point cloud. At the moment the point cloud is always output as black.

3) When aligning laser scans, in my opinion, accuracy has to be demonstrated somehow, at the moment aligning laser scans is more of a lottery than a survey.

4) When exporting scans aligned in Metashape into the E57 format, the point cloud MUST be output in a structured manner so that other programs such as Acad-Recap or Faro Scene can continue to work with the point cloud. At the moment, an unstructured point cloud is output, which will then no longer be the case can be further processed as a laser scan.

Dear Metashape Team: Please address the points and let me know whether any of these points will be included in a new Metashape version. For us as a surveying office, some of these points are crucial for processing laser scans in conjunction with photos in Metashape.

Thank you
Dieter

Ill continue to follow this thread.  It would be great to have feature as a tool in the bag.  Typically we gps all of our laser scans, but there are times that we do projects that dont require it and have both scans and UAV data.  It would be so nice to be able to align the images with the laser scan.  We have been playing with this feature but cannot seem to figure out how to get it to work- following agisoft's tutorial.

Here is my workflow:

-Import scans in E57 format and Fotos

-Unlock all coordinates of the scans and sangroups

-Align laser scans with reset positions
robust points are searched for in the scans and the scans are localized

-Align images with reset positions
Tiepoints are searched and aligned in the photos and in the 360-degree views of the scans. The orientation of the scans then follows the orientation of the 360-degree images

Then the scans are aligned with the photos. Then georeferencing can be carried out

The scans should be executed in color, then a better calculation flow is ensured.

The distance to the object should be about the same between Scans and photos, then enough points will be found.

Actually, the whole thing works well, it just requires an enormous amount of computational effort. If at some point the aligned scans could be exported back to E57 in a reasonable way, that would be an enormous relief for us. This is NOT possible at the moment, because all our survey scanning programs cannot read the exported E57 file as a structured file.
