Export Laserscans as E57 in structured format?
« on: May 22, 2024, 02:34:24 PM »
Hello,
we work a lot with laser scanning in conjunction with photogrammetry. For this purpose, the laser scans are aligned in Metashape. I would now like to export these aligned laser scans to the autodesk recap or Faro scene for further processing. When I try to read these exported E57 files into the other programs, I get error messages. Something must be wrong with the format here. The only program that reads the exported E57 files is cloudcompare.

However, the point data is then no longer structured, but pure point clouds without a point of view.

Is there a trick here to output the data as structured laser scan data?

Did you try LAS?

How do you store structured scans in LAS?

Even with the las format it is not possible to output a structured scan, although I don't know whether this format is even capable of this.

It would be nice if Alexey could comment on this.

We have structural decisions to make in our office and the ability to process and align scans in Metashape has a significant influence on these decisions. If someone from Agisoft were to say to me now: "We'll take care of your problems", then I would say "OK, let's wait and see", we'll continue working with our current method even though the current method in Metashape requires an enormous amount of time means. But we have higher accuracy. Exporting structured scans is one of the biggest problems we have with scan processing, forcing us to do the entire scan calculation twice in another program (Trimble Realworks).

I've summarized our biggest problems under the "Feature Request" section.

As I said, it would be nice if someone responsible at Agisoft would comment on how scan processing in Metashape will continue.

Hello Dieter,

Do I understand your request and workflow correctly: you load laser scans to Metashape, perform their alignment and would like to export them back to E57 (as structured scans, similar to the originals), but with the new referencing information?

What does this mean? Taken from the changes to the latest version.

• Added return number and timestamp attributes support to E57 import/export.

Unfortunately, exporting structured scans from Metashape still doesn't work.

I tried to install the beta.....

The licence can't be installed because of no connection to the activation server!?

Nope

Can`t connect to the activation server.

What´s the difference between those two steps because my internet is working?

Seems like there is a minor issue in current pre-release of 2.1.3 - permanent license is not considered, if there is an old expired trial license file. It will be fixed in the next update of 2.1.3, but can be fixed manually by removing the expired license file from the licensing directory.
