Recovery possible on Tiled model after computer crash?
« on: August 08, 2024, 10:17:47 AM »
Hi All,

I was creating a tiled model. It had been processing for 40 hours and there was an electricity blackout!!. Worst was the UPS didnt kick in and computer shut down!
I have not started Metashape yet. Is there anyway that Metashape may have done a incremental save? Can I do anything to recover the 40 hours of tiled model processing?

Any help very much appreciated (especially some good news  :'( :'()

Hi All,

Further to my first post, I have opened the metashape created folder  (projectname).files/3/0/tiled_model and there is 50Gb of data in that folder. 30gb is depth##.zip files, so I am guessing the depth maps are copyed into the tiled_model folder when first running the create tiled model function. That leaves 20gb other data.

Could is data help me to kick start the tiled model creation again?

Hello BenW22,

What assets do you see in the chunk contents for the project and what not empty sub-folders are there in {projectname}.files/3/0/ directory and which of them have .zip archives with the name corresponding to the folder name?

Hi Alexey,

Thankyou for responding. Also, if important, I'm using version 2.1.2 professional

If what you mean by "assets" is the objects listed under the chunk name on the workspace tab, then  - Under the Workspace Chunk is listed - Images, Markers, Tie Points, Depth Maps, 3d Model.

The (project name)\3\0\ folder contains the folders - depth_maps, model, point_cloud, thumbnails,tiled_model and frame.zip

Each one of those folders listed above contains zip files of the same name  - e.g. the "model" folder has the folder "model.zip" inside. The exception is the Tiled_Model folder. It has the following folders / files -
many folders of "depth###.zip" (where the ### denotes a number),
many folders of "images###.zip,
many files of extents###.dat,
many files of tex###.dat,
many files of uv###.dat and
single files oftiled_model.dat,texture_blocks.dat, texture_block_indices.dat, uv_blocks.dat, downscale.grp, model_blocks.dat

Thanks for any help

Ben

Hello Ben,

You can try to edit doc.xml inside the frame.zip archive (make a backup copy first) and add in the end of the file the links to the missing assets in a similar format, like existing lines, for example:
Code: [Select]
  <model id="1" path="model/model.zip"/>
  <depth_maps id="1" path="depth_maps/depth_maps.zip"/>
But it is only needed, if there are folders in the project tree structure that are not linked in frame.zip->doc.xml.

Since the tiled_model folder does not contain tiled_model.zip file, the asset cannot be recovered, therefore you need to run Build Tiled Model procedure again with reuse depth maps option enabled, if you want to use existing (active) set of the depth maps.

Hi Alexey,
Thank you very much for your time and knowledge.

Yes, it looks that I will unfortunately have to reprocess, which losses me 40 hours. I'm using a well specd computer, 40 hours on this computer is alot of processing. In this circumstance it was a electrical power failure and the failure of our UPS no working, not a computer crash or a Metashape crash.

13th Gen Intel Core i9-13900K
GeForce RTX 4090
Intel UHD Graphics 770
192GB (4x48GB) 5200MHz
Microsoft Windows 10 Pro
Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. Z790 GAMING X AX

.

Last year and early this year, I put in a feature suggestion for Metashape to have the option of Incremental Saves included. If Metashape had had this option I would not have lost all of this work. In this current circumstance it was a electrical power failure and the failure of our UPS not starting, not a computer crash or a Metashape crash. So the Incremental Save would have been brilliant.

I will again bump that up in the Requested Features Section. I hope it may be considered at Agisoft as I believe it would help a lot of your customers in giving them reassurance when processing the massive data sets and/or long periods of time that your customers have to do.  It would also be a very good selling feature.

Here is the link to my suggestion - https://www.agisoft.com/forum/index.php?topic=16002.msg68929#msg68929

Thank you again for your time.

Kind Regards
Ben
