Different camera, same chunk
« on: January 22, 2025, 10:42:16 PM »
Hi everyone,
I have a question: Is it possible to upload images taken by different drones in the same chunk in Metashape?
Or from different cameras, such as a drone and a DSLR camera?
For example, a facade survey done with a DJI Mini 2, and a roof survey done with a DJI Mini 3 Pro?
Can all the images be used together in the initial alignment phase and for all subsequent processing, like the dense cloud, 3D model, etc.?
Also, how do you handle the Optimize Cameras phase? I’m not sure about the english name, but the button looks like a star above the camera georeferencing.

Thank you

Yes of course, Each camera has its own optimization parameters.

Hello HakunaMatata,

Metashape will automatically split images taken by different cameras into separate calibration groups, but it is better to check that it was done correctly (via Tools Menu -> Camera Calibration dialog) before starting the alignment.

And generally it should not be a problem to process the images taken by different cameras in the same chunk, providing that level of detail for overlapping images from different cameras is more or less the same.
Would be a problem, if you are trying to align nadir only images taken with the drone from 300+ meters with the hand-help camera images of the building walls - they have very different effective resolution and also most likely lack overlap, as walls are not properly seen from the drone and from the ground you would not see the roof, as it is seen from the drone.
Best regards,

Thank you guys.

Do you know if there is something specific that I have to check?
I never tried to mix images taken by different cameras

Give it a try and experiment. Nothing specific needs to be checked.

See attached, you just need to check that it has created a different calibration groups for each camera/lens combination that was used. It will automatically do this if it detects a different sensor size or focal length, and possibly other criteria. In the attached I have two calibration groups in the top left, though I created these manually as they correspond to two separate but 'identical' cameras. If you do need to manually create groups you can select cameras in the bottom right pane and right click -> create group. You can also merge groups and split groups apart, but all you really need to check is that the groups were created correctly, and if the cameras differ then metashape is pretty good at doing that automatically.

Nothing specific needs to be checked.

Thank you guys.
Next days I'll try some experiments  ;D
