Points in point cloud disappear when zooming in and out
« on: March 19, 2025, 11:15:34 PM »
I am trying to edit a point cloud to remove "noise points". However, when I zoom in and out and look at the data at different angles, some of the points disappear and are only visible and selectable at a certain angle. How do I make sure I select all the points that I want to get rid off when I don't see the full point cloud at all scales?

The data is georeferenced with markers, but the photos have no internal EXIF info.

What could cause this behavior?

Thank you.

Hi sbond,

it COULD be about the points situation in space. Every point has x,y,z-values for its position and when you alter the angle of your model, the point might not be visible from that perspective.

Have you already tried to edit those "noise points" in the Tie Points and build the Point Cloud with the clean data? For this step, i am having pretty good results with the "Gradual selection" Tool which becomes available from the Model Drop-down menu once you have the Tie Points active. Here you can select points by reprojection error and reconstruction uncertainty with the help of a slider.

Good luck!

Yes olihar. The clipping plane. One of the weirdest and hardly useful features… I would almost call it a bug. Or perhaps is something our Agi-heroes left unfinished with a plan in mind, but they forgot the actual plan. Instead of an uncontrollable front clipping plan, wouldn’t you love to have a proper clipping box? you can save and manage them and use one or more to clip view and eventually exports without touching the region. Would you second that?

Sbond, a double click on the point cloud or model will fix the annoyance.

@sbond  shift + right mouse button you can adjust near clipping plane, I am using this very often, it is useful in orthographic views, when you want to hide something from certain distance.
