Orthomosaik with texture from tiled model with markers
« on: April 07, 2025, 02:36:51 PM »
Again and again we have the task of supplementing cross-sections of large 3D objects (castles, churches) with textured images.
Normal orthomosaiks in Metashape can only be used very poorly for this purpose, because the texturing of the object is always used only with images in the direction of view.

In the case of lateral surfaces, the orthophoto option simply projects the wrong images onto the surface. I have often criticized this in this forum, but obviously nothing will be changed in the algorithm of the orthophotos.

There is also the possibility to produce orthophotos from a tiled model. This model looks much better in the sloping surfaces; obviously a different algorithm is used here than for the orthomosaics.
To do this, we use the "Save View" option directly from the view of the screen.
However, this view can only be aligned/rotated by hand, which is too imprecise for the purposes of a cross-section.

Since one of the newer versions, you can also generate an orthophoto with the texture of a tiled model.
Unfortunately, this is not the case with the "from markers" option, which would fit our requirements exactly.

I hereby ask once again that this possibility is finally realized. I'm tired of having to replace hundreds of pictures with every orthomosaic, unfortunately that's a very dissatisfied job.

If I have overlooked any possibility that could lead to a solution to my problem in the current version, I urgently ask for suggestions and possible solutions.

I can't imagine I'm the only one with this problem.

Clients are increasingly demanding that the background of cross-sections be filled with texture. I know this can be done using markers in orthophotos, but the quality of orthophotos is simply too poor for oblique views!

How do you align textures precisely to the section plane, or do you always use orthophotos aligned with markers?

Hello Dieter,

In the version 2.2.1 it is possible to use Model as a data source for the orthmosaic generation and also you can enable "Transfer Texture" option. We'll check, what might be wrong with the Tiled Model selection for Planar projection mode, as it should work in similar way.

Thanks for the answer. By planar projection, do you mean the standard orthomosaic? As I said, it works much less well with obliquely displayed surfaces than the tiled model, since images are always selected in the viewing direction, but never images created perpendicular to the displayed surface. This only works with the tiled model.

OK, I understood.  :)

1) Creating the orthomosaic via markers with "apply texture from model" works.

2) Creating the orthomosaic via markers with "texture from tiled model" will work in the next version.

So far I can handle it for now, thank you very much for that.

But the question still remains for me why creating the orthomosaic directly from images gives such bad results on sloping surfaces. Actually, this is the best method for us to create orthomosaics, because the direct generation from images is a bit "sharper" than with the option "Apply texture". In addition, only with this method do I have the possibility to exchange image content afterwards, with the option "apply texture" this possibility of post-processing is eliminated.

Doesn't it make sense to adjust the algorithm here so that the results are better? That would only have advantages for us.
