One Titan or 2xAMD 7970's ?
« on: November 05, 2013, 07:26:49 PM »
Hi All.

I currently have a Titan setup and building a new PC to try and double output. We've gone for 2 x AMD 7970s instead this time. I get the impression this may be slightly faster with open-CL ..... What do you think before I order them?

I can confirm that two AMD 7970's are about 20% to %30 quicker than one titan on our setup and about 300 pounds cheaper.

I have 2 computers:

1) Dual Xeon 2620 2.0Ghz + 2 ATI 7970 and 64Gb of RAM
2) Intel I7 3.5Ghz + 1 NVIDIA GTX680 and 64Gb of RAM.

The computer 2 beats computer 1 EVERYTIME i launch a processing with PS Pro.

Damnit!  :-\

Its because you have low frequency DUAL xeon.. not everything can be run multithreaded... so a part of the reconstruction process run just on ONE core. so having it on 2 GHz vs 3,5 ( even turbo ?? ) its overrun the XEON cpu...... what precise model of CPU you have ?? aand for the speed of the process would recommend use Ubuntu 13.xx for most of the CPUs. WihShitt is mostly in the ALIGN stage much slower.....

So what do you guys think about using the Radeon HD 7990 6GB GDDR5? (2 x Tahiti XT2 on internal Crossfire)?

And what about using two HD 7990?

Good idea / bad idea?   ???

7990 are litlle lower clocked, there is problem withcooling too. BUT if you MoBo has only few PCI-E slots its better to use 7990.... if have 7970 can overclock a 15-20 %......

Alexey Pasumansky (Agisoft),

I strongly believe that we are quite a number of forum participants here that would be VERY VERY interested to learn about your experience/ opinion on the subject of OpenCL support (AMD/Nvidia) in the context of PhotoScan application. E.g. how big calculation advantage does the OpenCL 1.2 offer (used by PS software) compared to older version (Nvidia current version support)?

As you are surely aware of, the Agisoft hardware wiki has not been updated since one year, and therefore one might assume that it is not fully up to date these matters...  ;)
(I you already commented on this, sorry, I could not find it.)

Thank you in advance/ Tom

ps. And thank you Wishgranter and other guys for sharing your knowledge and experiences!  :)

pps. Anyone tried the Radeon R9 290X yet?

Hello mr map,

For PhotoScan OpenCL 1.2 is equal to 1.1 and 1.0.

I think we will update memory consumption tables for the version 1.0.0 when it will be finally released.
Best regards,

Alaxay,
Thank you for this clarification !! Really valuable!  8)

This leads me to the conclusion that (assuming that Nvidia cards support at least OpenCL 1.1 or 1.0) for now , the AMD GPU cards support of OpenCL 1.2 does not automatically make them more suited for PhotoScan computing tasks in comparision with Nvidia cards.

To other readers:
I speak totally without own experience on the subject, and greatly appreciate any info on this subject. I still have not decided what GPU?s to buy. I intend to invest a considerable amount of $ in a PhotoScan (and Adobe) workstation and the information available on this forum helps me use my money wisely.  :)  Thank you all!
