Scaling with scale bars destroys the model on export
« on: July 16, 2025, 08:57:08 AM »
Hello
I recently noticed a strange behavior of the program.
A model generated with:
- about 1000 photos from a handheld camera
- about 500 photos from a drone
After scaling to real dimensions - using the scale bar tool, the exported model has corrupted geometry (attached photo). Both Agisoft Viewer, Windows 3D viewer, Meshmixer, etc.... open the model with corrupted geometry. After re-importing it into metashape it looks normal, before transformation or after undoing the transformation and exporting the model again, it looks normal.
I checked the recurrence of the problem for this set of images on other versions of the program and all of them from 1.7 to 2.2.1 give the same effect, even when repeating the procedure of aligning the images, generating and then rescaling the model from the beginning.
I have done several projects of this type before and never encountered this type of problem.
Any ideas?

Hi!

Maybe model is exported in WGS84 coordinate system? Please, verify that Local Coordinates option is selected in Coordinate System parameter during export (attached screenshot).

Thanks for your reply.
Actually all my attempts were made with "local setting" on export window.  However I have found that preferences on reference tab are set to WGS... after switching to local I was finaly able to export model without errors. Rather strange, because suspecting that it might be a problem, I had already tried to clear reference in drone photos or even remove GPS metadatas from them before import.

Looks like project somehow got referenced to the center of the earth ([R] flag near chunk and extremely negative height coordinates of markers?).
And as a result exported z values don't have enough precision to represent such low height values.

So maybe besides using local coordinates you can also remove check near markers/cameras to ignore incorrect reference before using "Update Transform".
