Tunnel linear panoramic images from Lidar + imaging
« on: April 30, 2026, 09:44:07 PM »
Hi all,

Till now, i often use metashape (v.1.7.3) to produce orthomosaic from aerial nadiral images (aligning images, setting gcps, building dense point cloud, mesh and orthomosaic).

but now I would like to make a step forward, with tunnel acquisition by a mobile mapping system

i have:

- georeferenced tunnel dense point cloud (.las/.E57);
- georeferenced tunnel images taken by synchronized cameras, which take photos at a constant step (i.e. @1m), each framing a portion of the surface (arranged in a radial pattern to frame the entire tunnel, capturing images almost orthogonally to its surface).

What I would like to do is to create a 2D photo plan (linear panorama image, i don't know how to define it) for each camera that combines all the shots from that camera in a single "long" image. so that the final product is a single (real sized) long image for each camera.
The single images are undistorted (in .jpeg format); i also know the reference parameter for each image; i don't want a wonky orthomosaic projected onto a mesh, i would like to ""simply"" merge all those undistroted shots in a single 2d linear long panorama for each cameras

the final goal is to find structural defects and deterioration (and, possibly, be able to 2D/3D georeference them

(attached an example of some georeferenced and aligned shots taken by one of those cameras along the tunnel trajectory with 1m step)

Any suggestions for success are welcome, I hope we can start a good debate on this matte

thanks in advance, in the meantime I'll continue with my attempts

Hello engfi,

I can see that you could enable only cameras you want to generate panorama and then generate a planar Ortho mosaic of these cameras using 3 markers on a plane parallel to one of the relevant camera's focal plane.

In example, I generated a planar ortho for only the right looking caneras for a 4-camera rig moving along the tunnel axis.

You could also consider generating Ortho with cylindrical projection...
