Still about GoPro and cheap UAV
« on: January 18, 2014, 10:27:50 PM »
Hello everybody,

I read the numerous topics about using GoPro, I wonder I anybody ever used this to avoid fish eye effect

http://ragecams.com/shop/41mm-flat-lens-high-quality-gopro-hero3-line-p-591.html?osCsid=36fe1b99685e74543a974a4d67c0aa23

and this for the rolling shutter probelm

http://www.infocushd.com/products/marumi-nd4x-filter-55mm

I'd also like to know how and if this lenses would effect the software.....

I'm asking this becouse in this case this UAS could became a very interesting deal!

thanks a lot!

Diego.

Hi Diego ROn...
Just today I tested the GoPro Hero 3+ Black Edition on an esacopter...
I noticed that the photos are very distorted (12 Mpx - Wide), and the software is able to align them but you do not appreciate the differences in altitude...
I get much better results if I apply to the photos the Lens Correction performed in Photoshop CS6...
I complete workflow without any GCP (both aerial and terrestrial...)
I attach below some screenshots...
Bye

That looks cool. If you have time, could you show us some example photos at full resolution? I am really interested in the quality.

Did you experiment with video instead of photos? I wonder if good quality video at lower resolution would give similar results to photos at higher resolution.

Hi everybody,

Thanks for all the material you're sharing, If undestorted lenses works nicely (also the photosho option looks good actually), LA200 plus some extras for camera, could became a cheap and efficent alternative to the expensive sensefly (you could save about 12k)! I'm trying to make an apointment to test LA 200 flight capabilities. As soon as one of you has the flat lenses kit I'd like to see some snaps.

Hi Piste, can you share your camera settings?

As soon as Lehman answer I'll post updates.

In the meantime good survay :)

12MP-quality pictures with the GoPro3 and F2.5 60FOV lens.
not bad results!

Cool!!!! Material  ;D

The videos are amazing!

about the apple how would you comsider the mesh quality? did you try using a different camera in order to evaluate the differences? may be also using soft like cluod compare? Was it difficoult to change the lenses? does the camera still fit in the protective case?

Lehman answered me, they're going to send me a photogrammetric set taken with gopro. As soon as it arrives I'll share it with you :)

thanks KarolBastardKiter!

no problem buddy

the mesh quality is very good, there are some bumps/scars where the shiny surface of the apple was reflecting the light, but that's normal. overall the mesh is quite detailed and regular. the texture is also quite detailed.

yes, you can still fit the camera inside the case waterproof case, not sure if it's a good idea to fly your drone underwater though  ;D

i haven't had the chance to benchmark it against another camera unfortunately.

the lens job is a bit fiddly and you need time and slow hands, but is achievable by following any youtube video explaining it. after the lens swap you can still put the stock one back on for the fisheye effect.

Hello KarolBastardKiter,

which GoPro are you using? Black 3 or Black 3+.

I have read that the 3+ has a softer focus for large distances compared to the Hero 3. So for aerial imagery hero black 3 would be better???

But when using the lense you have bought, the issue with the focus for large distances should be fixed or not?

Cheers,

Paul

I have no idea about that. Where did you read that?

By the way I found out that the focus on my vids posted above is not perfect, I've just read about a funky technique you can use to precisely focus the lens to infinite distance, so my next videos I guess will be aerial and even sharper.

for example here

http://goprouser.freeforums.org/difference-in-focal-range-sharpness-hero3-blk-vs-plus-t14637-110.html

what is the technique to adjust the focus? could you tell us more about it?

"Focus the camera as well as you can then put the camera on a tripod. You'll have to use the 'Frame Mount' with an adapter as you want access to the lens and ideally exactly the same subject for each photo.

Make a small mark on the ring outside the lens at the 12 o'clock position. You could use a scalpel blade or add some tape and use a pen. Do the same to the outer rim of the lens itself.

Take a photo. Rotate the lens clockwise by a few degrees so the mark moves about 1mm. Take a photo. Repeat for 12 photos.

Examine the photo sizes. They will range from 3 - 7Mb or so. The largest will be the one that was most in focus, as sharp detail requires bytes. Rotate the lens back to the position it was for that photo (don't lose count). Verify with a photo either side of that position as the camera will have moved while you removed the card to check the sizes.

Done."

Hi KarolBastardKiter,

what about exif and focal lenght?

GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition focal length = 2.98 mm..... your new lens has a Focal Length of 5.5mm.... since I think Photoscan uses exif to compute geometry may be could be also helpful to manually edit the exif....

how does the focus works?

thaks :)

P.S. the waterproof case is usefull to protect the camera while landing a fixed wing UAV.
