Importation of XYZ point clouds
« on: January 30, 2014, 09:14:19 PM »
I have a series of .xyz datasets that contain many millions of points and it would be nice to mesh these points into a model so that I can analyse them. Doing this is problematic but with the algorithms available in photoscan, it would be a great addition to the software capabilities if this was included in the future.

+1 for importing point clouds

Only for me I'd be looking for other import options, ie .abc, .fbx, & .obj

Would be very nice indeed. This way we could experiment with filtering the dense point cloud in other programs.

it would be very nice to combine other point clouds with clouds from photoscan

Just wanted to see if anything was being done on this. I still struggle to mesh some of the laser scan files that I have and it would be really useful if photoscan could have the importation of point clouds, not just meshed models

At the moment PhotoScan requires point normals to be present in dense cloud, LAS format doesn't support normals, so it is very doubtful, that LAS import will be implemented.

Is there no way to calculate this point normals when importing? We would be very happy with such import.

+1 for .LAS file import or another file format for point clouds

This would also be great since we can use it to manually line up images to a point cloud to help the alignment process.

One reason for importing points: creating Orthophotos currently yeilds imagery only where photos overlap.  Any imagery around the edge without overlap has no underlying point cloud to drape the imagery over.  Importing points from some alternate source would enable inclusion of the non-overlap areas in the orthos.

For example: I'm working with some aerial photos from over 50 years ago.  I could just use a standard DEM and orthorectify them with terrain correction, getting all the way to the edges of non-overlap areas.  Or I could use PhotoScan, building a much better terrain model in the process, but losing the edges that lack overlap.  I've chosen the later, but it would be great to drop in some points from the DEM around the periphery so I didn't lose imagery.

Thanks!

It would be useful to be able to export point clouds from Photoscan for editing in other applications and then be able to import them back into Photoscan.
