Photoscan Used for Soda Shaq Basketball Game
« on: February 01, 2014, 08:33:34 PM »
Hey Guys.

A couple of months ago we had the opportunity to do a scan session with Shaquille O'Neal for an augmented reality mobile game called Soda Shaq Basketball. For the project we constructed a fairly inexpensive and mobile capture rig of 30 Canon A1300 cameras (running CHDK) and built a custom trigger system for it.  While the cameras did have trouble with his bald head, we brought a black/white tie-dye bandanna for him to wear to help with the alignment. However, for the cost and what it was ultimately being used for (mobile game) it was just the quality we needed to get the job done.

One again, big thanks to Agisoft for making such a wonderful and easy to use program. I know you hear it a lot...but you guys rock! 8)

Here's a link to a YouTube making of video (featuring me....yay)

And here is a write-up/mini-interview:

Thanks eduardoestrada85!

That was the most painful part of the whole shoot, pulling roughly 30 shots off per camera (around 900 images for the entire shoot). Since remote trigger with CHDK utilizes the USB connection it disables mounting to a PC. In order to mount the cameras we had to go to each camera and disable the remote trigger. After that we just used Windows built in photo downloader (so we could name them and clear from memory cards). Very time consuming.

So needless to say we've been slowly upgrading to DSLR's and are enjoying the speed increase with the save to hard drive feature. Much nicer! :)

Thanks,
Corey

That was awesome! Congratulations! And  so nice results with smaller cameras :)
I am practicing with the same setup right now. 10 rows of 3 cameras. But for some reason I get pretty different results depending on the material of the object I am shooting.
One question, I see you placed 6 umbrellas with the lights around Shaquille, was that amount of light fine with ISO 100 or you were using higher ISO?
What settings were you using in the cameras if you don't mind me asking?
That must have been a funny shooting :)

Hey Lambo!

Yes, we didn't have any studio flashes at that time so we used umbrella lights for the shoot. As for the ISO, I remember we did 200, shutter speed 0.5 and did manual adjustments to the exposure to compensate for the low lighting.

Haha, yes I did graduate from Full Sail waaaaay back in the day. I was actually in the very first computer animation class back in '98 to '00. :) Nothing like getting handed manuals that were photocopied from the Maya 1.0 docs then tossed in a 3-ring binder. haha. And who could forget Bernie's the "food" truck. :D Man has that school grown since.

Thanks,
Corey

That is awesome! ;)  I studied in Full Sail from 2001 to 2003. I remember the o2 computers running linux :) It was pretty nice experience overall.
Thanks for the details on the setup.
Did you have to do too much post cleanup with ZBrush or something else after Photoscan was done with the the Geo?
Thanks...
