Hi All, Geomagic is perfect tool for the hollowing of textured parts, its "easy", when the mesh is "clean, without any problems. For the skull i need approx 1 hour, to clean problems there, normally when is the mesh prepared, i get it under 10 minutes...... With all UVs and  vertex colors other stuff, even when need to delete few problematic areas....


There is way to do it even in Zbrush, as we have tested, but you have not the precise control about the shell thickness.... and it need a bit knowledge of the Zbrush sw 

It took me few day to get it working with Geomagic shell commands, as there can be problems when the mesh is not absolutely clean from errors in mesh. - as i asked few months back

Have used the Zcorp 3D 3DEDIT Pro, but it has problems with larger or "complicated" meshes, so sometimes we could not make hollow models there.....

Are you indicating Geomagic can handle repairing & shelling without destroying UVs or other texture info?

When the shell is created, where is the color coming from  ... nearest points?

Sounds like a good approach.  Will try this.

Not necessary to upload a file ... I'm taking a class in Geomagic next week, so I will probably learn how to do it there.

Hey there Igor,

The way we do it here at Scanlab is through zBrush.

1. Import your model
2. Duplicate the tool
3. Dynomesh the duplicate to 128 or something low
4. Deflate the duplicate to -6 or whatever works in your case.

5. Dynomesh the original tool
6. Merge Down the two tools
7. PolyGroups - Auto Group the new combined tool by continuity
8. Isolate and make visible only the inner Group(the one that's gonna be used as a boolean object)
9. PolyGroups - Group As Dynamesh Sub
10. Make the whole tool visible and Dynomesh again at required resolution.


Done.

Thanks  Scanlab. Don?t have Z brush but might look in to buying it. It is at an OK prize point compared to Maya and others.   Herd lots of great stuff about it.  Is it mostly a sculpturing modeling program or is good for hard surface modeling to?  Good render engine, animation tools? 

Cinema 4D looks really interesting to, Don?t know if it has any shelling features though.

zBrush is mostly used for organic stuff.
Hard surfaces are also doable in zBrush, but I would use other, better tools for accuracy critical projects. It does have a good render engine, but is not an animation package.

I don't know much about Cinema 4D though.

Haven?t tried it yet but looks very promising.   For those of you that do not use a mododeling program it seems it has some easy to use sculpt tools for basic clean up to.
