GPU recommendation Quadro K2000D or gaming card?
« on: April 07, 2014, 11:33:56 AM »
Hello,

I'm new to this and have an educational/research project which involves an 8 acre site with buildings to generate a high quality detailed model from.

I'm confused as to which graphics cards are better. I've just ordered a system with a Quadro K2000D card, but I'm thinking, following the Wiki, perhaps I should have had another card or pair of cards as this software does not use some of the features of the K2000D which make it a good CAD card, is that correct?

i74930K overclocked to 4.2 GHZ watercooled.

64GB RAM. I've asked if I can install more.

Windows 7 Pro - so I can access more memory.

750GB SSD.

4TB raid array, (2TB capacity) for storage.

So with a budget of up to ?500 + VAT, ideally for 2 cards if that makes more difference than one more expensive, what would you recommend?

Thanks.

Gaming card for sure, K2000 can be used for CAD, but search for test in PRO aps, depend on your use but for most task is the gaming GPU better....

An i7 can only address 64Gb, so you won't be able to.

Thanks! Really helpful. I have ordered the GTX 780 instead, slightly cheaper!

Thought so, thanks! We can move on to a Xeon based unit next year if it's going to make a large difference.

Price/performance always a compromise!

Hello weirdscience,

When you'll be planning to choose the workstation configuration, please check the following threads and posts, since the information mentioned there will be useful to make the proper choice:

Thanks Alexey, that's fantastic.

It looks like my system is a reasonable compromise, maximum memory, GTX 780 as recommended and the SSD drive should help with file load times.

From the threads, it seems Xeons are good for large data sets for the extra memory that they can address, but not much quicker if you Chunk the projects carefully to fit in with the limitations. I will be replacing the workstation in 12 months so will see how technology moves on by then.

I will also post some benchmarks when it arrives to help others.

Hi

Recently Ive benchmarked

Quadro 5000 (11 Cores @ 1026Mhz, 2559MB

2x Quadro 5000 (11 Cores @ 1026Mhz, 2559MB

GeForce GTX 680 (8 Cores @ 1124Mhz, 2047MB)

GeForce GTX 780 (12 Cores @ 1019Mhz, 3071MB)

GeForce GTX TITAN (14 Cores @ 928Mhz, 6143MB)

The 780GTX was WAY bang for buck!!  It  was seconds slower than the 2xK5000, or 1x Titan GTX

Right now Im sitting on 1x780GTX & 1 K5000 ...  with 128GB Ram. YAY!!
Smashes heavy jobs.

Done.
Sorry took so long, I had to get NDA approval first , since it was internal testing.
Posted to the main benchmark thread.
