I would like to give my comments about this old topic. In my opinion 3D scanning is a limited business. Examples can be seen for specific applications like figurines, games, movies, laser crystals and more.
Since 2007 I have a side hustle in making bronze portraits (
www.photosculptura.nl). I decided at the start to go niche instead of big. in my case realizing unique bronze portraits, bustes and plaques, for the business market.
In the process a single full frame camera is used in combination with Agisoft Metashape. The person face is always scanned from ear – ear. And yes, the result is an imperfect model, no points at the back side and the hair looks terrible. But, good news, this can easily be solved with sculpting software and some skills.
But bear in mind, the biggest problem is the marketing and sales of this kind of products. Trust me, this did cost me a lot of time and money. No complaints. After all for years it generates a constant annual turnover. Combined with very interesting contacts with clients and business partners over the years. Finally receiving applause is really a unique experience. For sure I wouldn’t like to miss this at all and strongly recommend others.
I hope this gives a clear insight into my “Business of 3D scanning”.
