Ball's Pyramid
« on: October 12, 2014, 05:05:30 AM »
My first real attempt at a GIS model. 6.9M faces, 4x8192px texture maps

I didn't take the photos. Weather only allowed for one lap of the island, so one side was looking straight into the sun. Tweaked the camera raw images as much as feasible and I was amazed at how well the reconstruction worked on the shaded side. 54 x 24mpx images (every 4th image provided)

Thanks. Printed out a small version and sent the file off for CNC milling at 1.8m as a base model for sculpting additional details.  Going to be very interesting to see the final product

... sent the file off for CNC milling ...

Looks like there are a lot of undercut areas, are you using a 4 or 5 axis machine?

I'm not sure what machine it's being done on, I just passed on the file. Yes, there are a lot of undercuts and I hope the machine is up to the job.   Worst case is it will require a lot of manual carving afterwards but even so it's still going to save them a lot of time. The guy who's preparing the model was already excited just to have the small 3D print as a reference for taking measurements.

If possible, can you post the pics of the cnc machined version if you get some ... be nice to see for comparison.

They seem pretty keen on documenting the entire process so hopefully there will be pictures of this stage.
