Agisoft and Amazon AWS - C4 instance Slower than my pc?
« on: January 22, 2015, 08:08:29 PM »
Hi, i'm demoing Agisoft Photoscan Pro and tested with a 150 images dataset, and I'm trying to understand its scalability.  I opened an Amazon EC2 Windows 2012 server - C4 High-CPU Eight Extra Large,  a 36 core based on XEON E5-2666 v3 and the benchmarks of multi-theads is perfect, and it has 64gb RAM. I'm using all processors in agisoft config since I don't use GPU on this instance.

I have an 8 cores i7-4770 @ 3.5ghz, with a GPU GTX780.

The problem is that my EC2 Instance is slower than my PC even in the parts that Agisoft DOESN'T use the GPU. Like photo allignment for example. It took over 50 minutes for the EC2 and 40 minutes in my PC. And every single part was slower...

Is there anything I have to do? Change to a linux instance or something? Or any kind of configuration? In amazon console I can see that the CPU is almost 95% in some parts... so its being used?

Thanks!

Hello ALK,

Appears that E5-2666 v3 has very low CPU frequency compared to the eight-core i7. The number of cores in this case is not a benefit, as extra resources are required for data transfer and management.

Also fast GPU on your desktop will improve the processing speed of dense cloud generation stage.

Hi ALK,

Is there a reason you went for the E5-2666 v3 Xeon? I also use one Xeon in one of my workstations but that's because it has 128GB of RAM and non-xeon cpu's can't handle that much. But since you're 'only' using 64 gigs...

Alexey,

I just changed to linux Ubuntu 14.04 in the same machine, optmized the cores for turbo, low C-state and now I'm getting a 56% faster processing than my physical machine.  So for spot instances it is good enough for me, and much cheaper than windows.

Still, I could'nt solve the display problem, I just can't see the result onscreen because I get this error:

Any suggestions from someone that understands graphic drivers in linux?

Why did you go with the C4 vs G2 instance? Has anyone tried this with a G instance?
