Best GPU for the money
« on: February 04, 2015, 10:12:59 PM »
So I have just built a new setup for my home to replace my old 1366 workstation. This will be used for 3D printing, 3D mesh design, photogrammetry, CAD (2D/3D), photoshop and a ton of other things. I have a Quadro K5000 that will be used for most of my work, but I am wanting to fit the system with 3 other GPUs in order to play around with larger Agisoft creations. Which cards would you recommend as the best bang for the buck? From looking around the forums it looks like the 780/780ti would be the best, but just want to make sure before I pull the trigger on 3 more cards.

Thanks

PS - here is the new system spec.

Asrock X99 WS Motherboard
Xeon E5-2643 6-Core CPU
128GB (8x16GB) DDR4 2133
1500W PSU
Quadro K5000 GPU
Corsair 540 Air Case
256 Samsung 850 Pro SSD (Boot drive)
2TB Corsair MX100 SSD Storage (4x512GB drives)

Per benchmarks on past posts the GTX980 is only doing 600-650 million samples/sec and the R9-290X is a little better at 750-775 million samples/sec.

The GTX 780ti is around 1000-1100 million samples/sec and the GTX780 runs around 700-750 million samples/sec

Just want to see if there are any cards im overlooking before I spring on 3 780ti cards

Normally the 980GTX and the R9-290 should have the same performance(+-15%).
Personally, i think the nvidia cards should be faster. The one big advantage of the 980 is the reduced power consumption.
Because of that you have less problems with head in your case.

Anyway, like mwittnebel says, with 290X the heat is a very big problem. In my job we have 2 290x and without a proper airflow both gpu reach 96ÂșC or more, and PhotoScan will crash, so...

Has anyone tried out the 7990 to see what numbers it puts out? Technically its two 7970 cards on a single GPU so it should be in the 1400-1500 million samples/sec

What is the maximum size of DDR4 memory?  Have searched internet and all can find is 8 GB sticks and in one place 16gb.  What kind of stick are used for the 256GB builds?  Have read that  memory speed does not affect Agisoft much. Is this true?

My build is using 8-16GB Crucial DDR4 2133 sticks. I was going to go with the new Crucial 32GB sticks, but the price is pretty high for them at the moment. The 16GB sticks are under $200 per stick

Not sure where you saw those numbers, but I'm getting 1000-1100 samples/sec on a single GTX980.  Others have too...

Must have looked at some old benchmarks or misread something on another post....either way the GTX980 runs $550-600 and does 1000-1100 samps/sec, the 780 ti runs $450-500 and does 950-1000 samps/sec and the HD7990 runs $300 and should do 1200-1400 samps/sec (based off of two 7970). Trying to find the best for the money, the only drawback with the 7990 is obviously the massive power draw of upwards of 400w per card.

Are you looking at the ~$300 refurbished 7990s on NewEgg etc? That seems like it would be outstanding for price/performance.  I'd go for it.  I've had mixed results with refurbished high-end cards over the years. A lot of artifacting and crashing in the past. But I've found some gems too.

@tutoss, which tool do you use for monitoring the GPU utilization?
