Question about cameras (equipment suggestions)
« on: March 20, 2015, 11:52:18 AM »
What would you guys suggest for a camera to use for photogrammetry?  I was looking online, and I notice many people use the Nikon D600, but it seems a little pricey.  Personally I was looking at the D3200 as it costs significantly less, and I am comfortable in that price range.  Can any one tell me if I can get by using the D3200?  Does anyone have any other suggestions?

The type of work is mainly going to be modelling of historic structures.  Thanks for your time.

You should get excellent results with the D3200.  If you have  more money to spend it will probably be worth it going for the D7100 instead.  It has no AA filter and a better body with lots of features the D3200 lacks.  DonĀ“t forget the importance of good lenses to.

Thanks Igor, do you happen to have a good staple of fixed lenses that you usually use?  Also, and this may be a terribly silly question, but what features would I use on the 7100?  I am very much still a novice, but I this is something that I want to pursue due to the lack of this service in my area.

D7100 has better image quality with no AA filter and some other benefits like better AF.  Google some reviews to form your own opinion  http://www.digitalrev.com/article/nikon-d7100-vs-d5200-vs/ODEyMzQzMTU_A

I use a D800 and a D810 which is FX and uses other lenses.  A friend has a d7100 and the results are really good.  Best lens for DX I'm not really sure.  Maybe someone using DX cameras can step in here with some advice.

Ha anyone used something like the Nikon GP-1 for georeferencing points?  I was doing some research and it seems like there are better systems (Solmeta), but I have not been able to find anything on accuracy.

Nikkor Macro 60 produced good result for me. I guess you should look for good macro lenses, they are disigned to make sharp images.
