First try not working (food photos)
« on: April 30, 2015, 09:25:39 AM »
Hey there so excited to give this a go for the first time.

Had a photoshoot recently for some food shots and decided while we were at it to use one food as a test piece to use Photoscan.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be working as expected.

We did 33 photos that look like this

but when I Align Photos (even with masking)

I'm getting this result

Where the projected photos only seem to be projecting from the same-ish area and not in a circular projection as I expected. I know the photos are of a white plate on a white background (which is only what we had at the time) so is this mucking it up? Or is it because we had the camera on a tripod and we turned the plate around?

Thanks in advance and look forward to your replies.

I have a feeling the complete white background is messing it up. Try putting something under the plate so it has additional objects to match and align the photos. Also try not doing a mask next time

Alternatively try automatic masking by taking a background shot without the food/plate present.

It looks like a round plate on a square plate, but you only turned the round plate. I agree with dtmcnamara's suggestion to put something (newspaper is good) under the round plate, on the square plate, and then rotate just the square plate and everything on it (newspaper, round plate, food).

Hello RossFranks,

If you wish, you can send us this dataset for testing, but in addition to the already given comments I can suggest to reshoot the dataset with more effective use of the image frame space. Also pay attention to the focal depth and image sharpness.

Thanks guys for the quick replies.

Yeah I tried a unmasked and masked version dtmcnamara and it did the same thing.

Ah ok James I'll try that next time having just a background shot, is there a specific setting to choose that background as a mask somewhere?

Ok Alexey Pasumansky I'll do a re-shoot with those suggestions.

Please hold...... :)

Tools -> Import -> Import Masks...

Then select 'From Background' method, and enter the background image file name. When you click ok, Photoscan will prompt you to locate the folder containing the image you specified.

Since it looks like you did at least two different camera positions, you would have to create a background image for each position and apply it only to 'Selected Cameras'.
