be nice not to have to deal with UV's... especially since it's almost impossible to re-do uv maps on any super high res geometry...

I just thought I would bump this with a gigantic +1
I'm so over faffing about with gigantic unusable UV maps. That is a general complaint not specific to PhotoScan :-)

one doubt though... does Ptex supports tris...? I thought quads only... at least in 3DCoat..

Yep (

), although not all applications implement the full ptex spec.
Mari is one painting app that I know for sure supports ptex triangles.

Nvidia has released couple of papers on how to render ptex on gpus.
