Calculating memory usage
« on: March 09, 2012, 06:05:48 PM »
Can anyone show how to calculate estimated RAM usage when building geometry? For example, X number of photos at Y size times Z quality equals A memory.

Isn't that page out of date though? I believe that PS 1.0.0 brought significant changes (dense point cloud) and some reduction in memory requirements? I never ran any comparisons between old PS and 1.0.0 prerelease, but it certainly felt I could deal with larger projects than previously.

Correct me if I am wrong, but if I am processing 72 photos (18megapixels) at high quality in Arbitrary mode, I would need about 36GB(DDR3-1600) of RAM? If I had a good GPU would that reduce the RAM requirement by much?

I forgot to mention that the size of the photo is 5184x3456 pixels.

NO. GPU mem is not that help here.. Close range  Photogrammetry was for a long time out of reach because of CPU speed and RAM usage..... the numbers are informative, every scene is different so the guideline is good to see what can be expected.....
