Symmetrical Object Problem
« on: August 05, 2015, 02:50:06 AM »
Hello

I am new to Photoscan and still in the process of learning how to get good scans. Right now I have a test object that is very symmetrical. Even though I have photographed it from many angles (all the way around multiple times) it keeps thinking all the cameras are on the same 2 sides of the object.

I tried to digitally color a few spots on the object to differentiate the sides to see if that would help jog Photoscan, but to no avail. Can someone take a look at these images to tell me how I could get Photoscan to correctly scan this object?

I'm using the standard version of Photoscan, not Pro.

Here are the images I'm using: http://files.chadtravis.com/Photoscn (The file is "Bag.7z.zip", after downloading remove the ".zip" from the name as it's actually a .7z file)

Thank you

The link to your images is not working:

Ah, it's a problem with my file server. I'll have to fix that later.
I think it's a problem with the file extension. Try downloading now, just remove the ".zip" from the filename, as it's actually a 7z file.

Hello chadt,

It seems that the quality of the images doesn't allow to find sufficient number of feature points on the leather surface. Also there are blinks of the surface that are different of every image (depending on it's rotation angle) that also hardens the process of the feature detection and image matching process.

Thanks for the response Alexey.

The problem is that it does a pretty good job at matching, and for one side of the object the poly comes out great, I just need it to realize that half the cameras should be on the other side.

Also, do you know a good way to reduce the amount of blinks (specularity?) on the surface?

(Though, I feel like, even if I had zero specularity I would still have the issue of symmetry.)

Hello chadt,

If you switch to the Show Points option in 2D photo view mode, you will see that there are not so many matching points on the surface, and areas where the blinks are present do not contain feature points.

To reduce the blinks you can try using softer and diffuse lights.

Thank you Alexey, I'll try again with softer and diffuse lights.
