Texture Problem with .ply files
« on: August 06, 2015, 03:32:28 AM »
Hello! I have been using Agisoft in conjuction with Meshlab and Cloud compare for a while now and I have never run into the following problem until this week:
This is my process
align photos
build dense cloud
build mesh
build texture
export model as .ply file and open it in meshlab

Usually the dialog box for this option had the "export texture" box greyed out, but the texture and color would still be great when i opened my .ply file in meshlab
I have been using the same process but now for some reason when i click export model, the option to "export texture" is not greyed out.
I have tried both clicking the box and not clicking the box however when i go to open my models in either meshlab or cloud compare they both alert me to a texture problem and give me a model that has color and shape but no texture..

I am not sure what I am doing wrong.
thank you so much for your help!!!!

Hi,
even though ply files can include texture coordinates to map UV textures, I hardly know a software that can import these correctly. Usually the vertex colors just shows up, which can be enough if the mesh is high res.
I usually go "the safe route" and export as obj with texture, where meshlab, cloudcompare, blender etc. don't have any problems in reading the files correctly.
Cheers!
