System Requirements -Performance
« on: October 21, 2011, 11:12:50 PM »
Hello PhotoScan Users!

I have been searching for a system like Photoscan for some time. I have evaluated many systems, but my limited use of Photoscan so far, says it is perfect for my needs!

Except for the processing time.

My projects consist of taking 20-30 images of small models, maybe 30cm long. I try to limit each photo to 3-5Meg, with most being 2-3Meg in size. These are 360 degree, ordered images.

Now.....on my cheap 32bit laptop with Intel duo core T5750 and 3Gig of memory these models take hours to process ( 4+ hours is my experience).....for under $2000 US, what would make this work a whole lot better???

Any information based on your experiences would be good!

Thank you,

Sam

Hello Sam,

We would recommend Desktop system with the following configuration:

CPU: Sandy Bridge 2600 (3.4 GHz, quad-core with hyper threading)
Motherboard: Socket 1155 with 4 DDR3 slots and at least 1 PCI-Express x16 slot
RAM: 16 GB (4 x 4GB DDR3 DIMS)
PSU: powerful enough to install a graphics accelerator later if required
Graphics (optional): GeForce GTX 580 graphics accelerator is recommended for OpenCL acceleration.
Operating system: 64 bit (for example, Windows 7)

Such config should cost less then $2000 US even including the LCD monitor (at least without graphics accelerator).
With best regards,

Hi Sam,

on that Mac Pro (2x6x2,66) i get about CPU performance of around 180 plus 50( up to 90) with a Radeon 5770 GPU-performanceon OS X

But performance values a varying a bit from scene to scene. (and i guess change with different releases too)

Regards
Jan

Does a Mac Pro with 12Core do it faster than a i7 2600?
Is it worth 3000usd more?

Hi,

i dont know the performance values of a i7, but i guess when you want to use the machine only for photoscan then you would go better with an powerful i7 and an powerful nvidia graphics card.

I posted the values only so you could compare.

Best regards
Jan

Hello Cristian,

You can use the following document as a reference regarding the number of images that can be processed according to the available amount of RAM:
http://www.agisoft.com/pdf/tips_and_tricks/PhotoScan_Memory_Requirements.pdf

CPU and GPU effect only on the processing speed.
