DEM for forest inventory
« on: February 12, 2013, 09:57:20 AM »
Hi all, hi 'foresters' (if any ;))
did any one make forest measurements (in the filed) in order to compare DEM by Pscan and manual measurements by e.g. ultra sonic Vertex or classic clinometer/heightmeter); or even laser?
Thanks.
George

Ok!
Here is finally the comparison DEM vs Classic forest height measurements

Interestingly that DEM exported directly from Pscan gave the worse results however the Point Cloud exported from Pscan gave the best (after some processing at ArgGIS).

Now I wonder has any one experienced that sort of issues with DEM exported directly from Pscan?

George,

Very interested in what you are doing - I am a timber appraiser in the Pacific NW and need a good method for timber inventories.

Please post a follow-up on your latest efforts

Thanks !!

I am working on a very similar project. Suunto vs lidar, TLS, Uav, medium and small format photogrammetry. Will have similar issues to you if no ground control is used for both lidar and photos.
PM me for a chat. Based in Oz so time difference is large.

Hi George,

The DEM will be affected by your processing settings inparticular depth filter.
