Vehicle Mounted Multicamera Rig - Camera Suggestions?
« on: January 12, 2016, 01:23:37 AM »
Looking for some input on a concept we're considering.  A vehicle mounted multi camera rig to capture roadways by driving through for rendering in Photoscan.  GoPros have been suggested but I feel the rolling shutter is going to ruin any images captured laterally to the vehicle's movement, not to mention the lack of manual exposure settings.  Ideally we would like cameras that we could control from inside the vehicle, either wirelessly or via USB... though anything with a time lapse setting would do.  Looking at using at least 3 cameras.  Any input on camera choice is appreciated!

Have a look at smartshooter http://kuvacode.com/ with a canon or nikon DSLR.
I think the smatshooter Pro version with multi camera control for up to 8 cameras is the right one for you http://kuvacode.com/buy
Features: http://kuvacode.com/smart-shooter/features
A list of supported cameras: http://kuvacode.com/smart-shooter/supported-cameras
You can get for example a Canon 1200D with the KIT lens for under 330$/€. So for three cameras and Smartshooter Pro around 1100 $/€.

Another inexpensively option with lower quality is to use a rig of raspberry Pi's with camera module, see here: http://www.pi3dscan.com/
