KMZ won't open in Google Earth
« on: May 09, 2012, 11:38:12 PM »
I exported a .kmz file  but it won't open in Google Earth. I have used Photoscan for .kmz files before and didn't run into this issue until updating to the latest version. Are there any known bugs with producing .kmz files in the new version?

How big is the file? Beyond 30 MB it didn't work well in my tests. Expect at least 20 seconds up to 1 minute until it opens. Could be that you need to change the "height" parameter, which behaves somehow strange. It worked when I used "Absolute height" and played around with different values.
How did you create the .kmz? The most stable way for me was to import the .dae as a "Model". The texture  is imported automatically. After that, you save it and the .kmz is constructed correctly by GE. In other methods I had troubles with the relative paths.

Thanks for responding Oliver. The file is very large (1.2GB) but the last one I exported was 440MB and I had no problems with it.  I followed your suggestion of exporting a .dae but can't get it to display in Google Earth. Do you use Photoscan's default settings when exporting the model (vertex colors, camera, vertex normals, split into chunks all checked)?
Thanks,
Kerri

1,2 GB...Jesus! I even had troubles with 70 MB in GE. How did you do that?
Yes, I always used the standard settings.
Try a higher compression rate of the texture .jpg file.

Hello Kerri,

Could you please check if significantly smaller models could be successfully opened in Google Earth (20.000-50.000 faces)?
And also please make sure that Local coordinates and "Export KML" flag are selected when exporting to COLLADA (.dae).
Best regards,

I have now made the .kmz files significantly smaller ( approx. 350 MB) by cropping out different areas and exporting. They now open in Google Earth but have the "big red X" in some areas. I have experimented with different export settings such as changing the tile size and estimating the boundary box. Any advice on what could be wrong?

Hello Kerri,

Do you mean that some tiles (for different zoom values) are not shown? Have you checked if unpacked .kmz opens successfully?
