Adding independent graphics card for performance boost
« on: July 02, 2016, 06:38:09 PM »
I'm currently running an AMD R9 290 graphics card in my PS computer. I have an older graphics card AMD 6950(?) doing nothing. If I add that into the PS computer as an independent graphics card (obviously not crossfired) will I get a performance boost or will I just screw things up? I have both the power and cooling capacity to support it.

Hello rbnkc,

You can install additional graphic card and use it as OpenCL device for the depth maps calculation. Crossfire (or SLI for NVidia) is not required, so it is possible to use a combination of the different GPU models.

DEFINITELY!

I am using two 970 GTXs and my old quadro k4000.. while the quadro kicks ass with CUDA, it is actually half as fast as the 970's for this sort of openCL calculation.  All together though, the system hauls ass.  Add everything you can.  Alexey and the team did an awesome job making Photoscan utilize every possible ounce of power IMHO.  Hope it helps!
