Mesh view distortion
« on: August 07, 2012, 10:51:43 PM »
Hello everyone. We have begun using PhotoScan for our project at:
http://okeeffeimagingproject.wordpress.com

After the geometry is created we can view the mesh with texture, solid, wireframe without a problem. However, when we close the file and reopen it we have a visual issue.

When I go from point cloud to textured the textured mesh appears. But when I move my mouse cursor over the mesh it disappears and only small portions of the mesh are visible. And they aren't even clearly visible they are distorted with black lines.

This is the computer we are using:
http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF06a/321957-321957-64295-3740645-4307559-5071171.html?dnr=1

We have 24GB RAM and a Intel® Core™ i7-2720QM (2.20 GHz, 6 MB L3 cache) processor.

This happens after every mesh we create. In order to view it again we have to change the view to solid and click back to texture, but if we move the mouse cursor over the mesh it disappears again.

What do you think could be the problem? Any information or advice would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks

Hello philomax,

Could you please specify the typical number of faces in the models you are working with? Does the problem appear with the small number of faces (50.000 - 200.000)?

Also could you please copy the starting lines from PhotoScan Console (just after the program start).

And please make sure you have up-to-date graphic card drivers installed.

Thank you for the responses. I appreciate the advice; however, I can't take a screenshot nor check the log because I am processing a chunk right now. I started this chunk on Tuesday and it's almost been going for 72 hours already. It's stuck on

Generating Mesh 10% 40 hours elapsed.

The timer continues to tick but the percentage doesn't move.

We are using a HP Elitebook Workstation with 24GB RAM, Intel i7 Quad Core 2.4GHZ, and a decent video card.

I am generating 149 photos. Each photo is around 5MB and I am processing the geometry in high quality. Should we not be processing so many photos at once?

Hello philomax,
Memory consumption mainly depends on Object type selected in Build Geometry dialog. Please refer to
AgiSoft Wiki to check approximate memory requirements for your dataset.

I see, thank you. Now does this also apply to merging chunks?

Would it still be feasible to divide these 149 photos into 4 chunks, then merge those chunks as individual units, or will it still perceive 149 photos to process?

Hello philomax,

We do not recommend model merging if high quality geometry is required since used methods produce lower quality merged models.

Hello philomax,

Looks like that reconstructed surface is zoomed to too close, therefore some groups of faces disappear. If that's the problem you should increase the distance between the model and the trackball.

And if the problem is not related to the zoom level than please provide a copy of a log file from console.

It looks that way but it's not zoomed in too close. I had to crop the image in order to post it on the forum so the whole object was within the view. The distortion remains whether I zoom or not. I will type the notes from the console.

Here are the two images. This first one is of the textured view without the distortion.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/64646458/PhotoScan%20error/mesh_shaded.jpg
The second one shows what happens when I move my cursor over the mesh window.

Hopefully this works.

Thank you.

Ok, nice to see it clearly. IF you zoom it disapear wholemesh later or just the one part ? Because the camera clipping occurs if zoom is to close ( is hard to say too close ) can you try another mesh - scene if problem presist ? totaly different if possible, if presist it can be problem with the DRIVER of GPU,

Try install older or newer driver and test it again....

Hello philomax,

Is it possible to switch your laptop to integrated graphic card for PhotoScan? If so please check if the problem still occurs.
And check if the graphic card drivers are up-to-date and properly installed.
