Processing on AWS Marketplace or similar
« on: August 14, 2013, 04:44:28 PM »
Hello everyone

I'm a newcomer to this forum so maybe this topic has aready been discussed, however I couldn't find much about it through the search function.

I was wondering if anyone has investigated or tried using cloud based computing to do the processing. Something like the amazon servers/AWS marketplace. I was taking to a friend about the high computing power demands of Photoscan and he suggested using amazon servers. I'm no expert on computing, but from what he said there are servers available (for an houry fee of course) that provide huge processing power, and can be run through something like a mirrored OS that you can install any applications.

If you guys have had any expeirence with this I would be grateful for any advise. I worry that although the processing times might be good, you would be restricted by upload/download speeds when you transfer the raw files.

Cheers
Sam

Members,

Would anyone share your experience with running Photoscan on Amazon EC2? What configuration machine would you choose for the task?

Thank You!

Hello Roman,

We suggest to keep in mind our general hardware recommendations (http://www.agisoft.com/downloads/system-requirements/):
6-8 core CPU with highest possible frequency, high-end gamer GPU (like nVidia GeForce GTX 980, for example) and RAM according to the image set size and desired quality.
Best regards,

You still looking in to this? If so where have you got to?

I've spent a not insignificant amount of time in this area. Let me know where you are at and I could try and point you in the right direction. PM me if interested.

Hello

Has anyone had any experience with Amazon AWS + PhotoScan?
Did you get a decent speed up? And what type of instance and/or cluster did you use?

I would think using the new graphics based instance would render the best performance. Also using a Linux system would probably also help. If someone tries this please let us know. Otherwise next week I will try to set it up and see about posting the results.

I tried this on a 32 x 2.8Ghz EC2 box with 60Gb RAM. It was 50% slower than my 4 x 4.6 Ghz PC. Windows on both.
