Stereo vs. Mono photos - and difference ?
« on: April 03, 2011, 12:40:47 AM »
Hello Dmitry,

first let me say that I am really impressed by Photoscan (Demo). It does a very
good job and I´m just about buying the software. I´ve compared others (3dSom and others, but yours is the best).

Anyway, I have a question regards stereo vs. mono photos in Photoscan. If I´m taking pictures from an object and I would make two versions, one with mono photos and one with stereo photos from the Fujifilm W3 camera. Will the result be better if I´m using stereo pictures (MDO) ? Will there be any quality difference ?

Thanks,
Martin

Hello Martin,

Thank you for positive feedback.

Using a mono camera has many advantages over Fujifilm W3 camera:
  • The image quality is likely to be better
  • Many cameras with different lens/sensors are available
  • The camera setup can be easily extended to the arbitrary number of shots

Fujifilm W3 camera can be useful as a low cost solution when capturing moving objects, as it produces already synchronized stereo shots. Unfortunately, this is useful only when 1 stereo pair is sufficient to capture 3D model geometry.

In general I would recommend using a mono camera (or multiple synchronized mono cameras) for better quality.

I have both a canon reflex and Fuji 3D w3.

I tested the w3 instead of eos 40D and I must confirm that reflex is much better.

Mpo are opened as 2 JPGs and processed same way as ordinary JPGs

W3 fit the need where you cannot shot with tripod, example churchs, bas relief shops and all that situation where is barely legal to shot pictures, example graveyards, here in Italy they are full of interesting subjects ...

Quality in not so bad and results are acceptable for my need (cnc machining)
