Reducing file size of Orthomosaics
« on: April 05, 2017, 07:34:49 PM »
Hi all,

I'm looking for a way to reduce the size of the orthomosaics we've produced. They're ~200 acre plots of land. We already export them as JPEGs.

Does anybody have a suggestion of how to process them differently, or a program that can compress the jpegs to a smaller size?

We're currently producing orthomosaics around 200-250MB and would like to have them in the 50-100MB range.

Thanks!

Hello philnesterovic,

To reduce the size of the orthomosaic you can use several options:

- use lower JPG quality option in the Export Orthomosaic dialog,
- use lower export resolution (m/pix),
- split the export into tiles of the smaller size (using Split in Blocks option).

I find ECW to be the best format when wanting to reduce file sizes by a large amount. Typically they will be a twentieth of the size of an uncompressed image.

Same advice: ECW is perfectly suited to reducing thez size of orthophotos files. A compression to 10% barely doesn't affect image quality. And reading these ECW files (using plugins) is very fast

Sorry reviving this old topic. I've searched around and can't find answer. There's multiple mentions on Agisoft forums of people recommending ECW format for smaller size orthomosaics. But I can't for the life of me find how to export one in that format, PhotoScan doesn't seem to support the file at export stage.

Is this even a feature or are people using some other software to convert to ECW?

Hello orellius,

Currently PhotoScan doesn't support direct ECW export.
