How to Export Realistic KMZ
« on: December 17, 2014, 10:12:44 AM »
Hi All,

Please excuse this newbie question.  This past week I captured some photos from a UAS for the purpose of creating a 3D model of a property.  I shot the photos vertically and with a varying degrees of obliqueness hoping to render a realist 3D model.  However when I exported the model to KMZ the facades of the house and trees do not contain the same shapes and detail I saw in the dense point cloud.  How can I export this point cloud so that it portrays a more true 3D experience when viewed in Google Earth?  My goal is  to have a realistic 3D fly though experience possible in GE.  Any suggestions for potential solutions using Photoscan or potentially other products would be greatly appreciated.  (3 attachments)

Thanks so much!

Hello kikbak,

Exporting model to KMZ saves reconstructed polygonal model with the texture applied. On the first screenshot it looks like you've used Orthophoto texture mapping mode. In this case no vertical surfaces will be textured properly. So I suggest to use Generic or Adaptive Orthophoto mapping mode in the Build Texture dialog.

Hi Alexey,  thanks for your prompt reply.  I will experiment with various parameters to improve the results.  Thanks again! mb

Hi Alexey, after changing the mapping modes I did end up with some better results = thank you.  Another question I have is in regards to the KMZ reference elevation.  When loaded in GE the 3D model sits way above the ground elevation instead of snapping right to the true surface.  Where in the process am I introducing this error?  Thanks so much!

Been awhile since this topic was posted, but still seeing the same issues with the kmz model and elevation. It seems the elevation of the exported model above the terrain is always around 30 meters or so. Wondering if the model can be exported without that +30 m bias?
